Last Thursday night Joel, Lucy, Courtney and I had the pleasure of going to the Mussel Bar in Fremantle. The weather was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. We were met by our waitress Amanda who was excellent all night. She was from NZ and her accent was a nice change to listen to.

We were lead to our table overlooking the glorious Fremantle fishing boat harbour.

The Mood Was Stirring.

I thought we would start the night off with a taste of home. I grew up not far from Margaret River, so a nice wine from that region seemed very fitting. We chose the Rosily Semillon Sauvignon Blanc which we shall describe as a fine wine with a seamless flow of fruit.

For entrée we chose 3 dishes:

Seared Scallops, which were perfectly cooked on a bed of crispy, honey pork belly threads topped off with a zesty jam. This was a table favourite.

Asparagus, cooked to crisp perfection with a side of smooth Persian fetta.

Tasting Plate, which consisted of salt and pepper squid (crispy with a zesty jam), pork belly, thinly sliced duck, chorizo with chilli and tomato jam and tiger prawns.

We also had the Mussel Bar house bread with Jingili olive oil which was fresh and warm.

We ordered more wine to get the evenings proceedings underway and decided on a New Zealand wine from the Awatere Valley. The Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc was my favourite of the night being dry and long with an ethereal texture and a hint of lemongrass. I LOVED this wine.

The Mood Was Electrified

For Main Course I had the Garlic Prawns and Morten Bay Bug’s Tails, sesame peanut butter, crisp asparagus red pepper salad. This was the envy of the night! The mixture of texture between the peanuts and the bugs’ tails was fantastic, and the Asparagus added a great freshness to the dish.

Courtney had the Chicken Breast basil scented orzo pasta, hot cacciatore and red pepper & tomato ragout. She enjoyed this dish with the chicken being succulent and the red pepper sauce sweetening the basil pasta.

Joel enjoyed his Char Grilled Amelia Park Lamb which was cooked perfectly medium rare in a Tunisian spice with the moussaka (Eggplant style lasagne) complementing excellently. For people who don’t like seafood this is a great option.

Lucy ordered the Fish of the Day which was pink snapper on a wild mushroom risotto cake with seared asparagus & a pepper sauce. She loved it.

It was time to order another bottle of wine and we tried to get another bottle of the Vavasour we drank them out of it…(Very Rock’n’ Roll!!) so our NZ waitress Amanda convinced us to give NZ another chance and decided on the 07 ATA RANGI Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc. It was lovely with layers of ripe citrus and hints of fresh herbs. It was heavier than the Vavasour but still quite nice.

The Mood Was Naughty

At this stage we were noticing the little things that the Mussel Bar had to offer:

We had concluded that the tables were a GREAT size, with lots of room for extras with no bumping of elbows. The views were still great with boats occasionally floating past. And the service was amazing. We never reached the bottom of our wine glass before it was refilled (I have to admit that is always great) but we had decided the music just wasn’t loud enough for our taste.

Do we dessert or do we NOT dessert? Of course we do!! We decided to let our chefs decide which desserts they would like to serve us.

They brought out three dishes for us to delight our taste buds. Orange Blossom Pannacotta which had a strange texture. A toasted cheesy with vanilla ice-cream on the top (the name of this one escapes me) and the table favourite Warm Sesame Brioche Pudding, it is the first dessert on the menu for good reason...It is SENSATIONAL!

We finished off the wonderful night with a present from the chef (A charcoaled Mussel Bar house bread with Eskimo Joe carved into it) and a tequila slammer then headed out to watch a friends band.

Overall Mussel Bar had excellent food, service and vibe. I can’t wait to go there again.

Mussel Bar in Fremantle

Quinten & the lovely Daneka

If there is one thing I am good at in this life, it’s definitely eating. I love eating fresh, well prepared produce with good wine and great company; Mussel Bar in Fremantle didn’t disappoint.

After relaxing with a glass of red, chosen from the comprehensive wine list, we soaked in some of the million dollar view that the Mussel Bar has to offer. The old rusty boats on the harbour and calm ocean waters add for great character. I was impressed with the impeccable service of the staff, being super friendly and incredibly efficient, even though I was in Dockers territory.

To start we tested the tasting plate which had something to please every palate. It was a nice warmup for what was to come. I was pleasantly surprised to see a great balance of choice on the menu of seafood and non seafood options. There was an interesting array of mussels ranging from Thai green curry to Dijon and horseradish cream. It was a tough decision in what to get for main but I was glad with my choice of the whole baby snapper. Although there was a battle with the bones, the fish was cooked perfectly and it was served on fresh crunchy greens, satisfying the taste buds. My girlfriend ordered the lamb with cous cous. She loved the meal and even had to fight me off; it was delicious. The presentation of all the meals was pretty special and the aromas would make any man lick his lips. I couldn’t say a bad word about this place; even the bread was great, served warm and crunchy.

Quinten's Baby Snapper

The stomach lining was stretched but I couldn’t resist dessert. The hot choc brownie was deliciously sinful, I might have to do a few extra laps at training but it was most definitely worth it.

Lads if you need to impress the ladies, this place is for you. It’s romantic without even trying. The soft candle light and live music was a great touch, my Mrs was quite impressed.

Not the cheapest of places but most certainly not overpriced, it was fresh produce and big meals. I am a fan and will definitely be back.

I went in to try the new menu, as (although the last was nice, it wasn't like the previous menu)... i am so thrilled and excited at the wonderful, new flavorful menu at the Mussel bar! The chefs seem to take such pride in the presentation, and above all, it is delicious! there is such a range of flavours.. the steak was cooks to perfection, the mussels where as tasty as every and the deserts where beautiful and flavourful. My partner enjoyed the prawns and Thai Mussels, just superb!

Service:

We had a tall blond waitress. For a busy Saturday night, i must say she was an absolute delight. Friendly, polite, well mannered and food suggestions where great! i could see how busy she was helping another member of staff (seemed new), yet she still delivered the best service we have ever had.

Ambience:

Beautiful view, food and service. Would have liked some jazzier music, but above all it was great! it was nice to be greeted at the door.

Overall:
The food was fantastic, and the service was the best we have ever had. a fantastic anniversary for my partner and i!

Fantastic views, great food, and very pleasant service.

Two of us had dinner on a Friday night recently, and were very impressed. We arrived just in time to see the sunset over the boats, magic! We started with 2 entrees, and would definitely recommend them. The first was the scallops on potato, plump and cooked perfectly ($26). My partner had the squid entree, and the asian style dressing was just divine ($20). The presentation for both dishes was outstanding.

For mains, I had the traditional mussels, and they would be one of the best I've had in years. The mussels were large, juicy and served with the traditional tomato based sauce, with a hint of chilli ($29). You can have it as hot as you like. My partner had the fish of the day, which was dhufish. A good sized fillet of fish, served with a medley of vegetables ($50)

We were impressed with the stafff, especially their friendliness. The bill came to $143.00 for the two of us, including a soft drink, a glass of wine and some bread. The restaurant has a lovely ambience, and we look forward to going back.

We decided to celebrate our birthdays jointly and with the help of an Eating WA voucher which I'd been dying to use, we had a really good meal. We started off with the tasting plate and the italian style mussels (on recommendation of the waitress). We were really impressed by the tasting plate as it had a really good variety of tastes, flavours and textures plus it was prettily presented. There was chorizo, salt and pepper squid on Asian salad with a slightly sweet dressing, eel on Japanese potato cake, smoked trout and salmon eggs, tiger prawns. The mussels came as requested as spicy and that satisfied even our tastebuds which we're used to torturing with bird's eye chillies. Our mains were onion crusted lamb rack with an unusual cauliflower side ( smooth and very yummy) and the seafood pie. The pie was very tasty but I wouldn't order it again as somehow I had higher expectations of it. We finished off with the brownie with hazelnut mousse, sour cherry sauce and ice cream. Just the thing to finish off a very luxurious meal. The views made the whole dining experience very special. Service was fantastic and we enjoyed our meal there. So, a big thank you to Mussel Bar and Eating WA for our birthday celebration.

What a great location, down of the water. It was a cold and windy night when we went, being inside and looking at the weather was just heartwarming. The Ambience is this place is just relaxing and all the tables get a great view, they have done a great job.

We all tried a different mussels dish and all where first rate, the mussels are the small, sweet and nicely cooked and sauce is delicious and rich, the chips were also some of the best chips I have ever had (and I have had a lot of chips!). A point to note might be the spicy scale. We asked for medium which was on the mild side for us, we will try hot next time we go I think.

Service was overall excellent. Service is such a difficult thing to get right. The service during the usual service events was excellent, the ordering, the delivery and removal of plates all very nice, with a good level of personal interaction and professionalism. If there is something they could improve it is the service outside those usual service events. For example, no one offered us more water or more wine (which we did not want but still when the bottle is empty is nice to asked). The table next to us spilt a glass of wine which resulted in a fair amount of activity at the table, no one appeared to notice although several servers where around, someone should have been there with a towel to assist. Service is difficult balancing multiple tasks, for me to get 5 stars there could be just a little more attention to the room outside the normal service events and beyond the 20 things that I am sure is going on inside all of the servers heads on a busy night.

Overall we will be back I, perhaps on a nice warm day next time.

After having my hair trial for my wedding in the afternoon, it felt like a good excuse to go out for a nice romantic dinner. So we headed to the Mussel Bar as I still had an EatingWA voucher from several months ago waiting to be used!

On arrival, we were greeted and seated immediately by a waitress at a table with a fantastic view of the harbour. The table was a bit sticky and first thoughts turned to cleanliness. When queried, the waitress was apologetic and explained that it was due to a new cleaning product they were trialling and immediately wiped the table again for us. After perusing the menu, we decided on the house bread for starters and then the lamb rack and the fillet steak. It felt a bit silly not ordering seafood in a seafood restaurant but neither of us are huge fans. I was also quite impressed at the range of fruit juices that were available. Most restaurants I have been to usually only have two choices, orange and apple, but here there was orange, apple, cranberry, pineapple and guava. And they were quite happy to mix the juices for you aswell, which the waitress suggested to us when my fiancee asked what the guava juice was like.

The house bread with olive oil came out piping hot and still steaming fresh. It was delicious and while we normally like having butter, this bread was yummy just on its own or dipped in the oil. The lamb came out with a full rack, a vegetable shishkebab and a cauliflower truffled cream thing, on a bed of snow peas. The lamb was very simply done, crusted with some mint and was quite tasty. Normally my fiancee hates mushrooms but for some reason he quite happily wolfed the lot down without a squirm so I was very impressed. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium, topped with enoki and field mushrooms and melted cheese, on a potato gratin and asparagus. It was simply delicious. The only reason I didn't eat the asparagus was because I don't like asparagus in general.

Up next was dessert, with a hot chocolate brownie topped with a hazelnut mousse and vanilla icecream and surrounded by a berry sauce. The hazelnut mousse was basically a chocolate mousse with chopped hazelnuts mixed in and was perfect. Unfortunately the brownie tasted burnt and I couldn't finish it. My fiancee had the vanilla pannacotta with chai icecream which he also wolfed down with enthusiasm. He also pronouced his hot chocolate as the best he'd ever had.

Because it was a weeknight and fairly quiet, the mood was lovely and romantic, the low lighting, smooth decor and stunning view all made for a lovely evening.

Throughout the evening the Maitre'D aswell as the waitresses asked how our meals were and also to top up our drinks but without being too intrusive. They were very friendly and professional, not snobby or cheeky but happy to crack a joke or too with diners. When the waitress came around to collect our plates and asked how the desserts were, we mentioned that the brownie had tasted a bit burnt, when she brought the bill around she made the brownie complimentary even though I hadn't asked for a refund or a replacement.

I was thoroughly impressed by the service and the food, the price was a little higher than what I would pay, but having the voucher made it alot easier on the back pocket!

Last night we visited this restaurant for my birthday, courtesy of an Eating WA voucher.

We were hoping for a romantic dinner, and this venue did not disappoint. Situated on the harbour, it was in a prime position to see the waves gently lapping against the boardwalk, the colours of the buildings and neon signs around it ensuring a beautiful reflection on the water, and the boats swaying in the breeze. The ambiance of the restaurant was lovely, with candles lit next to polished silverware and glasses on each table. The chairs were also quite comfortable! It was not a busy night, with perhaps only 5 other tables there throughout the evening.

We chose the Tasting Plate as our entrée. The highlights for us were the chorizo sausages with chilli and tomato jam, which proved to be a wonderful taste sensation and the salt and pepper squid, which my husband proclaimed, was the best he had ever tasted. Other items on the plate were smoked eel, trout and tiger prawns, all of which were delicious.

When it came to choosing mains, we figured that we should skip the chicken and lamb etc and head for the mussels, seeing as that is why we were all the way in Fremantle on a weeknight. My husband selected Italian Mussels, which were cooked beautifully with tomato, olive oil, garlic, chilli and herbs. I chose Thai Green Curry Mussels, which had a coconut broth and included ingredients such as lemon grass, chilli and coriander. The aroma was delightful, and I had to sit a moment with my nose near the bowl savouring it. We also ordered the bread to mop up the juices and broth, attempting to ensure nothing was left. However, it became all too much in the end, I just couldn’t fit it all in, although I went through it the bowl to make sure I had eaten every last mussel.

Often when ordering mussels there are always at least 3-5% that have not opened up and we have to put aside. We often feel a little cheated, as if we haven’t quite got what we paid and were hoping for. However, not one mussel was firmly closed and we were able to eat every single one. This was great!

The wine is reasonably marked up, in as much as it is not unaffordable to have a nice bottle. One thing we liked about the wine list is they seemed to have 1 glass of each wine variety, not just one white and one red on offer. To accompany our meal, we selected a Wills Domain 2004 Semillon, one of our favourites.

Service throughout the evening was efficient and friendly. The only reason I have marked it down ever so slightly is that twice we did have to fill our own wine glasses, they were very good about this in the beginning, but after my husband refused another top-up as he was driving and needed to pace himself, it dropped off a little bit. However, our waitress was very nice and knew the menu well when we were talking about what we were trying to decide between and was great with recommendations. Dishes were cleared promptly, and we didn’t have to wait very long for our meals.

We were too full for dessert, and to be honest I was slightly worried about how much it was all costing us. However, the bill came to about $136 and with the voucher we only had to pay $86. A fantastic night out to celebrate my birthday, one worth the trek for us to Fremantle, and I would highly recommend this place for everything from a romantic meal for 2 to a group dinner.

Our group enjoyed a Friday night at the Mussel Bar with a relative visiting from Scotland (she wanted to eat at a restaurant with an ocean view!)

Everything was superb. Our South African waitress was brilliant! She didn't 'stalk' our table but she was also extremely efficient and friendly without being too overbearing.
The ambience was lovely. Although it was a shame that we didn't get to hear much of the pianist and singer, the mood was very relaxed and comfortable.

To start I ordered the natural oysters which (thankfully) allowed me to keep an obsession for them. My main choice was the pea and goats cheese ravioli which melted in my mouth and therefore the savoured feeling was to die for! And we all know there is always that corner of the stomach waiting for the 'final instalment' - dessert! The passionfruit brulee was at room temperature and very subtle on the palate. However towards the middle the sweetness was a little sickening and unfortunately it was left behind to ponder what could have been.

The seven of us thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we will definitely be heading back there in the near future.

Last night we were treated to a wonderful dinner for our first wedding anniversary curtsey of The Mussel Bar and an EatingWA competition voucher! The surrounds of this unique and stylish restaurant are warm and ambient without the pretension of other high class establishments and we were able to enjoy our meal watching the water as the sun slowly set behind the harbour. The food was absolutely first class and the head waitress was very attentive throughout the evening, making sure we were well looked after although we were not by least the only diners there.

For starters we enjoyed a tasting plate for two which consisted of grilled prawns on a bed of corn and tomato salsa; sweet lime calamari, chorizo, smoked salmon cake and smoked venison, a delightful combination of sweet and savoury flavours. For main I had the baby clam squid ink pasta, with the clams in shell and Chinese mushrooms. This was fresh and the combination of the clams and the mushrooms extremely flavoursome. Kimmik had the fish of the day which was fresh, plump, perfectly grilled and served with perfectly done buttered beans and asparagus and sweet cooked potatoes. Although we were unable to get the wine we were after, a wine was suggested to us and this turned out to be a wonderful accompaniment.

As if we did not have enough to eat, desserts proved too tempting and upon the first crack of my yoghurt and passionfruit brulee, it was proven true that the some things in life definitely are worth waiting for till the end. I love creme brulee and have tasted many disastrous variants on the theme. This brulee is possibly better than any true crème brulee I have tasted. Delicious light custard swirled with chunks of cool yoghurt with a crunchy caramelised top served at exactly the right temperature. Kimmik tucked into a chocolate brownie which the waitress had informed us had just come from the oven as all the staff had suddenly disappeared to congregate around the kitchen. It was served with ice cream with a cherry syrup on a big dinner plate. Kimmik slurped the entire thing up.

The Mussel Bar ensured that we had a perfect evening that was like a dream with the courses flowing smoothly, fantastic waitress and wonderful atmosphere. Despite our efforts to spend the entire $200 voucher we still came in under and despite the waitress being kind enough to try and make us out a voucher for the remaining amount, we were more than happy to donate the proceeds as a tip for her and her staff who had been so hospitable to us. As a thank you the waitress presented us with a plateful of those little white elephant chocolates, my favourites when I was in high school, I haven't seen them for ages! It would be a pleasure to dine again the Mussel Bar. The waitress suggested we should come back for the Australia Day fireworks, stopping to have a chat with us even though the place was quite busy. There are some restaurant gems on the Fremantle Esplanade which I have dined at and I can without reserve add The Mussel Bar to top of that list!

I was very eager to dine here and after being the proud winner of a hundred dollar voucher (thanks to EatingWA) we rushed down to Freo to sample from the very talked about menu. I started with the Duck and Pork Rillette with fruit compote and crisp bread, followed by the Beef Fillet with Red wine Jus and to finish...well how could I resist the chocolate plate for two! Which was a work of art in every sense!

Each dish was sensational and although I am definitely not a lover of seafood there are plenty of non seafood dishes on the menu. My Husband on the other hand was delighted with the wide choice of seafood from, of course, the fresh Mussels to Crayfish to a Giant gourmet seafood platter. He settled on the whole baby snapper.

This is a truly beautiful looking place set over the waters with big open windows to let those views in with dim romantic lighting, friendly attentive staff, creative, delicious food....the works. Definitely a place we enjoyed and will do again.
